No Playbook
Across Virginia, communities confronted and endured “Massive Resistance” to school desegregation. Alumni from Charlottesville and Albemarle County schools shared their first-hand experiences in a comprehensive oral history project for the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society. Grounded in students’ experiences of their own neighborhoods and school years, the project expresses how cooperative activities, such as sports, can draw people together while simultaneously highlighting how discrimination endures. We were honored to design and develop No Playbook, a digital archive that presents these candid stories through voice, transcripts, yearbook photos, and a timeline for context. Centering the audio recordings of in-person interviews, No Playbook invites visitors to explore connected people, themes, and locations to connect old stories and uncover new understanding.
